THE ROSE GARDEN.
This is a private garden on Corridor Norte in the Nueva California part of Volcan. This garden is a delight all year round. I asked the gardener if the owner was selling the roses and he said "No, he just grows them for the pleasure."
CHIRIQUI VIEJO RIVER.
This is the view to the Baru Volcano from the Chiriqui Viejo River bridge-just north of the town. This is a spectacular site especially in the dry season.
FREEDOM FIGHTERS MEMORIAL.
This is the memorial obelisk to the Volcan freedom fighters of 1968. It is located in a park in front of the Bomberos (fire hall). In 1968 when the rest of Panama meekly accepted the military coup, the men of Volcan took a valiant stand against the injustice.
MYSTERIOUS MATA DE PAVA HILL.
This is one of Volcan's enduring mysteries-the Mata de Pava hill. This is reputed to be the site of a large and ancient indian burial ground. Many locals claim to have seen mysterious UFO-style lights above and around this hill. The true explanantion of the lights may be more mundane.
PASO ANCHO VALLEY.
This is a view across the Paso Ancho Valley to the Baru Volcano from the summit of Mata De Pava hill. The road in the right foreground is another Volcan mystery; here drivers can turn off their engine and then coast along at 20 kilometers an hour - uphill.
BANDSHELL CENTRAL PARK.
This park located in front of the fire station is a staging place for many of the Fiesta's and gatherings in this mountain town. Sadly we do have a litter problem, but as you can see on this particular day-things are pretty tidy.
KID'S WORLD sounds like it is for just young people- but not so. They have a wonderful restaurant and a cosy Wine Bar where adults can sit and relax while an arcade in the center of the building is full of things to keep the "younger" persons safely occupied.
DOS RIOS HOTEL is located just a short distance north of the town. It has a very good restaurant and bar. Perhaps the best feature is the beautifully landscaped "Eternal Spring" gardens.
